Flashcards: AI-generated study aids

Flashcards turn a content item's transcript into a set of self-assessment question cards. Covers generating and curating the cards, the display toggle, and the learner experience.

Scenario

A learner who just watched a video — or worked through a course or guide — has no quick way to check what actually stuck. Flashcards generate a set of question-and-answer cards from the content so learners can test their own recall.

Solution

Flashcards are managed per content item, from the Gen AI Features section of the item's Edit view — the same section that holds the AI Summary. They work on video, course, and guide content. There's no system-wide setup and no need to contact support: you generate the cards on an item, then choose whether to display them.

Flashcards need real content to draw on. In the editor, the Generate button stays disabled until the item has a transcript or an AI summary (in addition to its title and description) — you can't generate cards from a title and description alone. Because the AI summary is itself generated from the transcript, in practice the content needs a transcript.

To generate and curate them:

  1. Open the content item's Edit view. (The Gen AI Features section appears only when editing an existing item, not while creating one.)

  2. Go to Gen AI Features in the left pane.

  3. Under Flashcards, select Generate (or Re-Generate to replace existing cards). The system creates a set of five question-and-answer pairs.

  4. If you see an error when generating, ensure you have all 3 required fields filled out - Title, Description, Transcript OR Summary

  5. Review the cards under Questions and Answers. You can edit any question or answer inline, or delete a card with the trash icon next to it. You can't add cards of your own — the set comes from the generator. Deleting the last remaining card turns Display Flashcards off automatically.

  6. Turn on Display Flashcards to show them to learners ("Turn on to display AI-generated flashcards for self-assessment"). The toggle stays disabled until at least one card exists. Turn it off to hide Flashcards on that item.

  7. Save - Flashcards now display on the content's landing page under Summary

The Display Flashcards default can cascade from tenant or channel settings, but the per-item toggle always controls a specific item.

What the learner sees

On the content landing page, a Flashcards card — labeled Test your knowledge, with an AI Generated badge — appears below the Summary and above Feedback.

Each card shows a question. The learner thinks through the answer, clicks the card to flip it (Click to show the answer), then marks their own recall with Mark Correct or Mark Incorrect and selects Next. Once every card has been marked, a Finish button appears on the last card to calculate results. The results screen shows Congratulations! with the score (70% or higher), or Keep Practicing... below that, along with "You got a [X]% score!" and a Try Again option to retake the set.

This is self-assessment: the learner marks their own recall, and as the panel notes, it isn't tracked for accountability purposes. The score is self-reported and isn't recorded.

Flashcards vs. Assessments

Flashcards are an informal, self-marked recall check attached to a content item. They aren't the graded Assessments feature — no answers are scored by the system, and results aren't stored or reported as a pass/fail outcome.
