Want to see what learners see without changing your role? This guide shows Admins and Platform Organizers how to switch to a regular user's view with deprivileged mode, then switch back.
Deprivileged mode only lasts for your current session. It never changes your role, so you can't lock yourself out of admin access.
Prerequisites
Your platform role is Admin or Platform Organizer.
You can see a grey eye icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen, just above the chat bubble.
Note: Channel Owners and Regular Users don't get this icon. Neither do people who are only listed as an organizer or facilitator on a specific event or content item.
Steps
1. Click the eye icon
In the bottom-left corner, hover over the grey eye icon. The tooltip says "Click to enter deprivileged mode — view the app as a regular user." Click the icon.
2. Browse as a regular user
The page reloads. The icon turns orange and shows a crossed-out eye, which means deprivileged mode is on. Admin menus, dashboards, and edit, assign and
management options are hidden, just as they are for a regular user.
3. Switch back
Click the orange icon again. The page reloads and your full permissions come back.
Verify it worked
The icon is orange while deprivileged mode is on and grey when it's off.
Hover over the orange icon. The tooltip says "Deprivileged mode active — viewing as regular user. Click to restore permissions."
Good to know
Content you own or facilitate, or that sits in a channel you own: Edit options still appear, because regular users who own content can edit it too. To see a learner's view of your own content, use a separate test account.
Content limited to certain groups: Deprivileged mode hides your admin permissions. It isn't a reliable way to check which groups can see an item. To check that, use a test account that belongs to the group.
Logging out, or switching browser or device: Deprivileged mode only applies to your current session. A new session starts in normal mode.
Common issues
I don't see the eye icon. Make sure your role is Admin or Platform Organizer. If it is, contact PlusPlus Support. The feature can be turned off for your site.
I still see an Edit button. You probably own or facilitate that item. See "Good to know" above.
